Did you make any resolutions this year? Or have previous disappointments discouraged you from mentioning the R word?

After years of feeling as though I was missing something by boycotting the tradition, I learned to play a little game with myself.  I learned to name the things I wanted to accomplish ”goals” instead of resolutions. They take on greater importance for me that way and a goal isn’t something you have to wait ’til the first of the year to take action on.  Of course, the beginning of a new year isn’t a bad time to start either. The people behind the 100 Day Challenge know and cater to this tendency.

The 100 Day Challenge could very well be the motivation you need to kick start a new year and a new you. I took the challenge last January and learned things about myself I wouldn’t have otherwise. I’m doing it again and I want you to join me. Though the Goals Guy isn’t officially launching this session until the 3rd, you can start right away. I did. Here’s a short motivational clip, whether you decide to DO the program or not.

Let’s hone the concept previously presented in “Between Desperate and Detached: Finding the Road to your Readers.” Let’s focus on increasing our desirability so that our writing becomes irresistible.

Most writers have fallen in love with prose that has poured from someone else’s pen. We’ve been seduced, bitten, and stricken with an unquenchable thirst for more. My favorite authors always leave me wanting: Sedaris can’t write fast enough, Sherman Alexie’s work is hard to find and Seymour Krim’s is even harder. When I do get the opportunity read their work it’s easy to imagine their voice in my ear telling the story over the roar [click to continue…]

Reach Your Goals for 2010: There’s Still Time

by Fawn on September 15, 2010

We can’t ignore the fact that—like the leaves on the deciduous trees—2010 is almost over. It seems as if the year passed as fast as the season’s first bag of Halloween candy will. Many started 2010 eager and optimistic, noting “this is the year.” But setbacks and daily demands have a tendency to impede our progress. We may find ourselves holding a bag of empty promises, and wrappers. But there’s still time to accomplish a few of the things we set out to this year.

Remember the goals or resolutions you wrote down way back when at the beginning of the year? Perhaps, like me, you didn’t make any resolutions. But we all have goals, whether it’s eating fewer French fries or moving halfway around the world. And those don’t necessitate a certain day of the year to profess, or accomplish. I know, 3 ½ months doesn’t [click to continue…]

Time is Money: Invest in Yourself

by Fawn on August 17, 2010

One of the disadvantages of being a human in the 21st century is that we’ve become the ultimate racing machine—and not ultimate as in unbeatable. We rush through our day, ticking off items on our agenda like laps around the track, sighing and shaking our heads at the clock as we whiz by. And even though we’re behind, we throw in a few extra pit stops and maybe a detour—still hungry for that checkered flag. The problem with racing the clock, however, is that whatever time we get … the clock reached it first.

We resolve to take second place hoping to earn extra points for our effort. I had a boss, once, who’d answer his cell phone even while perched on porcelain. One of my ex-coworkers returned from washing his hands in the restroom and claimed he heard the boss’s voice carry on a one-sided conversation from a stall. And, sadder still, I didn’t doubt it. Our boss was like that—bound to cell phones and PDA’s to the point of depriving himself a private poop.

Time is money, after all. [click to continue…]

The Canon PowerShot G11, Macro: Getting Down to the Gnat’s Ass

July 17, 2010

After months of hemming-and-hawing I finally broke down and replaced my stolen Canon PowerShot G9 with the awesome G11. I’d take a picture of it for you but I don’t want to pull out my outdated Olympus D-SLR to do it. But you can view stellar product images, a complete spec sheet, and thorough reviews at Canon Digital Photography Review (since Canon’s [...]
